Nursing Assistant II Refresher Program
This course is designed to assess and validate NAII Skills competencies for candidates whose NAII certification lapsed in the previous 24 months. The skills include Oxygen Therapy, Sterile Dressing Changes, Wound Irrigations, Nasogastric and Gastrostomy Care, Ostomy Care, Fecal Disimpaction, Tracheostomy Care, Urinary Catheterizations, and IV Assistive Activities. Successful graduates will submit applications for listing on the NAII Registry and will be considered as being a Certified Nursing Assistant II (CNA II). No further testing will be required.
Candidates must bring one of the following to the Health Education Department, West Campus Suite 32, Monday – Thursday 9:00am – 4:00pm:
- Current NC NA I Registry Listing
- Copy of NC Board of Nursing NA II Registry listing showing the expiration date within the previous 24 months.
The candidate must also provide a copy of their Driver’s License or other state issued photo ID along with a copy of their Social Security Card (number should be covered). First and last names must match.

The Nursing Assistant II performs nursing skills approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and under the supervision of licensed nurses. Emphasis is placed on infection control, including sterile technique. Tasks that may be delegated to the NA II by the licensed nurse include: sterile technique, wound Irrigation and care, suctioning, tracheostomy care, IV fluid assistive activities, ostomy care, urinary catheter insertion and removal, and tube feedings.
Nursing Assistant II (NAII) are employed in Hospitals, Long Term Care Facilities, Rehabilitation Centers, Clinics, Hospices, Psychiatric Centers, and Home Care. There is a need for NA II, especially in hospitals.
Earnings for NA II vary depending on experience, shift and length of service. Entry level pay may begin at &12.00 for the new NAII but range from $14.00-$20.00 with experience and location.
The 10 hour NA II program includes nursing skills taught in accordance with the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Classroom, laboratory, and clinical learning experiences are included. Skills include oxygen therapy, suctioning, sterile dressing changes, IV fluid assistive activities, ostomy care, gastrostomy/nasogastric feedings, and urinary catheterizations. Safety, infection control, and sterile procedures are emphasized. Upon successful course completion, the student is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide II by the NC Board of Nursing.
Candidates must be certified as NA II and be listed on the NC Department of Health Service Regulation Nurse Aide Registry with no substantiated findings of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of property.
Upon successful completion of the NA II program, graduates must register with the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
