This course is designed to provide basic training to individuals desiring to become an Activity Director in a healthcare related setting, such as long term care or assisted living facilities or adult care homes. This course follows the state approved course outline including (1) an overview of the Activity Director profession, (2) Human Development and the Aging Process, (3) Standards of Practice, (4) Activity Care Planning, and (5) Methods of Service Delivery. Persons completing the entire 60 hours of training become qualified to work as an Activity Director in a Nursing Home or Assisted Living Facility.

Introduction to AutismThis NC Board of Nursing approved course is designed to meet the training requirements to become qualified as a Medication Aide. It will cover the six rights of medication administration for non-licensed personnel. Medication AideThe Nursing Assistant I course at Forsyth Tech is a state approved course which teaches basic nursing skills to the student. Such skills are required to provide personal care for patients, residents, the elderly and others requiring medical assistance in a healthcare setting. Emphasis is placed on patient safety and infection control, the aging process, communication, legal and ethical issues, patient rights, personal care, vital signs, elimination, nutrition, emergencies, rehabilitation, proper body mechanics and mental health. This course includes a clinical component.
Students are prepared to take the North Carolina Nurse Aide Competency Examination, a requirement for listing on the NC Nurse Aide I Registry. Upon successful completion of the exam, the candidate will be considered a Certified Nursing Assistant I (CNA I). CPR certification is included in the class and required to take by all student even if they hold a current certification.

Nursing Assistant I Hybrid ProgramThe Nursing Assistant I Refresher course is a 48 hour (non-clinical) state approved course designed to update individuals who have been listed within the past two years on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry but let their certification lapse. This course is also a refresher for Nursing Assistants registered in another state (current or lapsed within the previous two years) who are seeking certification as a Nursing Assistant in North Carolina. Students are prepared to take the North Carolina Nurse Aide Competency Examination, a requirement for listing on the NC Nurse Aide I Registry. Upon successful completion of the exam, the candidate will be considered a Certified Nursing Assistant I (CNA I). Note: This course does not have a clinical component.

Nursing Assistant I Refresher ProgramThe Nursing Assistant II course at Forsyth Tech is a 180 hour state approved course which teaches basic nursing skills to the student in accordance with the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Tasks include oxygen therapy, tracheostomy care, sterile dressing changes, IV fluid assistive activities, ostomy care, gastrostomy feedings/nasogastric feedings, and catheterizations. Classroom, laboratory and clinical learning experiences are included. Upon successful completion of the course and skill/competency evaluation, the student is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide II by the NC Board of Nursing Nurse Aide Registry and will be considered as being a Certified Nursing Assistant II (CNA II).

Nursing Assistant II Hybrid ProgramThis course is designed to assess and validate NAII Skills competencies for candidates whose NAII certification lapsed in the previous 24 months. The skills include Oxygen Therapy, Sterile Dressing Changes, Wound Irrigations, Nasogastric and Gastrostomy Care, Ostomy Care, Fecal Disimpaction, Tracheostomy Care, Urinary Catheterizations, and IV Assistive Activities. Successful graduates will submit applications for listing on the NAII Registry and will be considered as being a Certified Nursing Assistant II (CNA II). No further testing will be required.

Nursing Assistant II Refresher ProgramThis course is designed to prepare the student to become a Certified EKG (ECG) and Telemetry Technician and to gain employment. The course will cover the anatomy and physiology of the heart as it relates to cardiac rhythm interpretations, principles of EKG, rhythm recognition of sinus, atrial, junctional, ventricular, pacemaker, and heart block rhythms. Skills will include operating EKG equipment, printing and mounting cardiac rhythm strips, as well as interpreting over 30 cardiac rhythms produced from 12 and 6 lead telemetry monitors. A 24-hour clinical component is included.

Telemetry Cardiovascular TechnicianThis training prepares the student to draw blood specimens from patients for the purpose of testing and analyzing blood. A phlebotomist’s job includes maintenance of equipment used in obtaining blood specimens, the use of appropriate communication skills when working with patients, the selection of venipuncture sites, the care of blood specimens and the entry of the testing process into the computer, as well as clerical duties associated with record keeping. This course consists of theory and clinical experiences which will be available in the hospital, outpatient clinics and central processing areas.
Important!: Students will have to practice venipuncture which includes being stuck and sticking others.

PhlebotomyThe Registered Behavior Technician (RBT®) is a nationally recognized paraprofessional certification in behavior analysis. RBTs assist in delivering direct behavior-analytic services, implementing behavior plans developed by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst, and collecting data. The benefits of taking the RBT course include options to work with and support children and adults with autism, intellectual, developmental and behavioral disabilities and disorders.
Completing this course is only one component required in order to apply for certification. Please see the Behavior Analysis Certification Board website for more information on the application process and certification.
The course includes 40 hours of instruction and a practicum component of 31.5 hours, which will be completed at an autism specialty school.
Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the student will receive a certificate of completion, which should enhance employment opportunities in the field of autism treatment and education.

This course is designed to provide individuals with the required knowledge, tools, and resources to become recognized as a certified Community Health Worker (CHW) in North Carolina working in a variety of healthcare and community settings (Health Departments, Hospitals, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Clinics, Faith-based Organizations, etc.). Instruction is designed to cover the nine core competencies essential to working as a certified CHW which include communication, capacity building, service coordination, interpersonal, advocacy, outreach, personal/professional skills. The knowledge base competencies will cover health and social issues that disproportionately impact clients including but not limited to chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, and cancer. Some of the social issues covered will include safety, emergency preparedness, social isolation, and adverse childhood experiences (ACES). Students will also learn about the changing health care landscape in North Carolina and how to work with their clients in connecting them to resources through NCCARES 360 and others. Upon completion of this training students will be eligible for listing as a NC Certified Community Health Worker. Course facilitators must complete a train-the-trainer course prior to providing certification instruction.

Community Health WorkerThis 4-course program is 100% online using the Blackboard learning management system. It is designed to develop medical coding skills. Emphasis is placed on diagnostic and procedural coding in the outpatient facility. Students will learn the foundation of medical terminology including anatomy and physiology, the proper way to review medical charts and physician documents, the rules and regulations of medical coding, coding errors to be avoided and preparation to become a professional coder.

Students will be introduced to the use of health information and the electronic health record for many settings within the health care industry. EMT Certification
The Forsyth Tech EMS program paramedic academy is a highly competitive program designed to prepare students for a successful career in emergency medical services. Upon completion of the paramedic academy, graduates will be eligible to sit for the North Carolina State paramedic examination as well as the National Registry paramedic examination.
Candidates who wish to apply for the paramedic academy must complete all prerequisites to be eligible to apply for the paramedic program. Below is a comprehensive list of the requirements that must be fulfilled before submitting your application:
1.EMS Course Requirement
- You must complete either EMS 4200 or EMS 110 prior to registering for the EMT course.
2. Anatomy & Physiology Requirement
- You must complete one of the following Anatomy & Physiology courses, passing with a grade of C or higher, prior to registering for the course:
- BIO-168 & BIO-169: Anatomy and Physiology I & II
- BIO-163: Basic Anatomy and Physiology
- EMS-3163: Basic Anatomy and Physiology
- BIO-165 & BIO-166: Anatomy and Physiology I & II
3. Math and Reading Competency Requirement
- You must demonstrate college-level math and reading competency by meeting one of the following tier categories:
- Tier 1: Proof of post-secondary degree.
- Tier 2: Proof of High School Diploma or GED, plus one of the following test scores from the last 12 months: NCDAP, ACT, SAT, HiSET, ACCUPLACER, COMPASS, or ASSET showing acceptable scores for Math and English.
- Tier 3: College transcript showing successful completion of a college-level English course (ENG 111 or higher) and a college-level Math course.
4. Mandatory Orientation Session
- Attendance at a mandatory orientation session is required before you can apply as a paramedic candidate.
Upon completion of these prerequisite courses and requirements, paramedic candidates can apply for the paramedic program. Note that admission to the college does not automatically ensure acceptance into the paramedic program.
After submitting their application, paramedic candidates must take a paramedic entry exam. To be eligible for the paramedic academy, candidates must achieve a predefined minimum score on the entry exam. Only the top 20 candidates who meet the minimum score requirement will be admitted into the program.
Upon completion of all steps, paramedic candidates will be ranked based on their entry exam scores, and the top 20 candidates will be admitted into the paramedic program.
Forsyth Tech Fire Academy is an intense 27-week program (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday) that uses real life scenarios and conditions to prepare firefighters for the challenges they will face. It provides rigorous training and will test you physically and mentally. You will work with highly qualified instructors who have the experience and know-how to train you for anything, and you’ll learn using the latest technology.
The Academy takes place at the Emergency Services Training Center at the Northwest Forsyth Center in King. The facility offers the latest advancements in firefighter training, including a six-story Burn Building that lets you experience a variety of real-life scenarios under controlled burn conditions, and a five-story Drill Tower that lets you learn how to get in and out of high-rise buildings.
To be accepted into the Forsyth Tech Fire Academy, you must be at least 18 years of age with a High School diploma or GED and meet the following requirements:
- Complete a rigorous physical ability exam
- Complete an application packet
- Obtain medical and physical exams at your own expense
- Sponsored by a Fire Department (contact us if not currently sponsored)

Basic Law Enforcement TrainingParticipants will learn the skills and knowledge required of a line crew helper. They will learn to set and climb poles, install crossarms, hardware, line, and transformers. They will learn how to use various tools and equipment of the trade through actual field experience. Overhead and underground construction practices will also be taught along with associated subjects such as basic electricity, transformers, etc. Classroom training will cover safety, electrical theory, interviewing skills, and the importance of attitude and teamwork to succeed in today’s work environment. Participants will be exposed to classroom instruction along with physically demanding outdoor construction work in varying weather conditions. Students will be assigned to crews for the more demanding tasks and for actual crew experience. Safety and teamwork will be stressed throughout the course. Participants will be expected to become accustomed to heights while pole climbing and to complete a variety of tasks while on the pole.
To apply for admission into the program, the applicant must have the following prerequisites and physical health requirements.
• A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
• Must be at least 18 years old by the first day of classes to enroll.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Weigh less than 275lbs.
• No felonies. This may significantly prohibit employment opportunities in the industry.
Additionally, all students must attend and successfully complete a mandatory class offered monthly. This is a one day, four-hour orientation titled, HRD: Introduction to Electrical Lineworker. Once complete, you will be placed on a chronological waitlist. If you choose to move forward you will then be contacted to register for the full program as courses are scheduled and space becomes available.
Enrollment is limited and based on a first come, first serve basis.

Electrical LineworkerTechnical & Trades Courses

If you are, or wish to be an auto technician, you may want to be certified. As a certified auto technician, you will be able to conduct the NC State required auto safety and On Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) inspections. All vehicles, regardless of year of manufacture, must have an annual safety inspection and vehicles newer than 1995, must also have an annual OBD II inspection. Forsyth Tech offers both of these 8-hour courses. The courses can each be completed in one 8-hour day or two 4-hour evenings. Each course requires a separate registration fee.
After completing each of the required courses and passing the state exam given in the class, you will be certified to do safety and OBD II inspections.
The local DMV will do a background check before the certificate becomes official. You should check with the local DMV at 336.767.8808, if you are concerned with anything in your background that could void this certification.

Auto Safety and OBD IIAutomotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification is a way for technicians to show mastery of a variety of automotive components. Certification serves to demonstrate expertise to customers, shop owners, and fellow techs.
To become ASE certified, a technician must have two years of on-the-job training or one year of OJT and a two-year degree in automotive repair to qualify for certification. When this has been met, technicians can sit for a system-specific examination. To remain ASE certified, technicians must retest every five years.
Forsyth Tech offers classes to help technicians prepare for these ASE examinations. The classes offered include brake systems, steering and suspension systems, electrical systems, and HVAC systems. Each class is 24 contact hours and meets for 3 hours twice a week. All classes are held at our Transportation Center.

Automotive Service ExcellenceCDL drivers are in high demand! In just four weeks, learn everything you need to hit the road: defensive driving, range maneuvers, safety regulations and accident prevention, maintenance and more. Upon completion, students will be prepared to earn their CDL Class A license, enabling them to drive Class A vehicles on both interstate and intrastate routes.
Classes are Monday thru Thursday from 7:30am – 5pm and cost $2300. There will be classes starting on October 28, 2024 and November 25, 2024.
Forsyth Tech offers three different defensive driving courses. Please look below to determine which course best fits your needs:
- AliveAt25 – For those who are under the age of 25 who have received a traffic citation The course is 4 hours, in person, and costs $79.00. The next course offerings are:
- Saturday, November 2, 2024 from 8am – 12pm
- Tuesday, December 3, 2024 from 6pm – 10pm.
- Defensive Driving 4 hours – For those who have received traffic citations. May be taken by individuals under 25 years of age who have already taken Alive At 25 and are not eligible to take Alive At 25 again. May only be taken once in a 3-year period. The course is 4 hours, in person, and costs $79.00. The next course offerings:
- Tuesday, November 5, 2024 from 6pm – 10pm
- Saturday, December 7, 2024 from 8am – 12pm
- Defensive Driving 8 Hours – For those who have received traffic citations and have already completed the Defensive Driving 4 hour course. May only be taken once in a 3-year period. The course is 8 hours, in person, and costs $105.00. The next course offerings:
- Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 8am – 5pm
- Saturday, November 16, 2024 from 8am – 5pm
This class instructs you in the principles of electrical installation and repair. Starting with electrical safety and theory, the course continues with electrical codes that must be followed and the necessary knowledge for repair. This includes the troubleshooting of the electrical circuit and the installation of the parts needed for repair. Also included is the sizing of wire according to amp load and types of conductors used for repair. You will learn to install new electrical circuits and equipment. Included in the course is a 12-hour section on Human Resource Development (HRD). Upon completion of this course, you will receive a certificate and should have the necessary training for an entry level position with an electrical contractor.

Additionally, all students must attend and successfully complete a mandatory class offered monthly. This is a one day, four-hour orientation titled, HRD: Introduction to Electrical Lineworker. Once complete, you will be placed on a chronological waitlist. If you choose to move forward you will then be contacted to register for the full program as courses are scheduled and space becomes available.

Electrical LineworkerThis is a 3-month course that instructs the student in various technical skills that includes: Carpentry, Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, OSHA Safety, and HRD skills. In partnership with the National Apartment Association, this class also includes the Licensed Aquatic Facility Technician certification, CFC card, and the Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician (CAMT) certification

Facility Maintenance TechnicianThis is an introductory course, designed to prepare the student for an occupation in the air conditioning and refrigeration trade. These classes can be completed separately over two semesters or taken as a combined class (when offered) within one semester. Level I must be successfully completed before taking Level II.
Level I includes:
- Introduction to Refrigeration, including: heat transfer, refrigeration components, refrigeration tools, operation of a walk-in cooler, compressor troubleshooting and replacement.
- HVAC Electricity, including: ohms, amps and volts, Ohms Law, basic wiring diagrams and symbols, control circuits, and understanding schematics.
- Oil, Gas and Electric Furnaces, including: fuel oil properties, oil burners, furnace operation and repair, natural/LP gas properties, gas burners, gas furnace operation and repair.
- Heat Pump Service, including: heat pump cycle, components, troubleshooting, understanding sub-cooling, super heat, and using heat pump charging charts.
Level II includes:
- Mechanical Cooling, including: refrigeration cycle, refrigerant charging, load calculation and duct design.
- PLC’s / CFC, including: digital logic, input/output, CPU operation, ladder logic basics, and CFC Certification
- HVAC Controls, including: electric controls, pneumatic controls, mechanical refrigeration controls (metering devices), electronic control boards, and thermostats.
- HVAC troubleshooting, including: pressure-temperature chart and refrigerants. Students will also be using diagrams for troubleshooting.

HVAC Service TechnicianMotorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) certified rider coaches will guide you through basic skills of motorcycle operation, effective braking and obstacle operation, as well as safe riding strategies. If you are unable to meet the physical or coordination requirements, you may be required to discontinue the riding portion of the course with no refund provided.
Prerequisite: Valid Driver’s License, 18 years of age or older, able to balance and ride a bicycle.
The course includes an online classroom and in person motorcycle riding. The online portion MUST be completed before you attend the riding portion. It takes approximately 4 hours to complete. The riding portion meets on Saturday and Sunday from 8am – 5pm and the entire course costs $190.00. The next course offering is January 11, 2025.
