TRIO Upward Bound
Who we are
Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO program granted by the U.S. Department of Education. The program provides opportunities that are aimed to enhance students’ academic development, engage in career exploration, assist students with their academic progress, and motivate students toward successful completion of their high school education while preparing for post-secondary education opportunities.
Other TRIO programs that you may have heard of include Student Support Services, Upward Bound Math/Sciences, Veterans Upward Bound, Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Centers, and the Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program. These programs were established to assist students in overcoming class, social, academic, and cultural barriers to higher education. A full description of each TRIO program may be found on the Council for Opportunity in Education’s website.

Our host schools we work with are North Forsyth High School and Glenn High School. Each year, the Upward Bound (UB) staff identifies, with the help of host high schools partners, students who meet UB program requirements. UB services only 60 students at each partner school each year by providing them with academic, career, social, and cultural support throughout high school. By applying to UB, students will take a giant step toward assuring they are prepared for post-secondary education and have academic success. UB is free for students who apply and are excepted into the program.
As part of the Civil Rights Movement and the War on Poverty, TRIO Programs were created to provide college access to limited income, first generation students and provide them with the opportunities and tools to earn college degrees and end the cycle of poverty. The three original TRIO programs were Upward Bound (created in 1964), Talent Search (1965), and Student Support Services (1968). These three programs provided the umbrella term “TRIO”.
The mission of the TRIO Upward Bound (UB) program is to empower first-generation and limited-income students to reach their full potential by providing academic support, mentorship, and opportunities for personal, academic, and professional development. Through Upward Bound (UB), we strive to increase access to higher education and create a pathway for success for our students.
