Medical Coding Program
Program Summary
This 4-course program is 100% online using the Blackboard learning management system. It is designed to develop medical coding skills. Emphasis is placed on diagnostic and procedural coding in the outpatient facility. Students will learn the foundation of medical terminology including anatomy and physiology, the proper way to review medical charts and physician documents, the rules and regulations of medical coding, coding errors to be avoided and preparation to become a professional coder.
Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in coding for reimbursement. The final course in the series prepares the students to take the certified coding examination.
Medical Terminology
This 64- hour online course provides a comprehensive coverage of all body systems and medical terminology associated with each system. It introduces prefixes, suffixes and word roots used in the language of medicine. Topics include medical vocabulary and the terms that relate to anatomy, physiological and pathological conditions, and treatment of selected systems. Upon completion, students should be able to pronounce, spell and define medical terms as related to selected body systems and their pathological disorders.
This course is a required requisite for and designed as part of a series to prepare students interested in becoming a Certified Professional Coder (CPC).

ICD Coding
(Prerequisite: Medical Terminology). This 64-hour advanced online course will provide the student with sound knowledge of medical coding rules and regulations, coding errors to be avoided, as well as the ability to review and assign accurate ICD-10 diagnostic codes across a wide range of clinical cases. The course is designed as part of a series to prepare students interested in becoming a Certified Professional Coder (CPC).

CPT Coding
(Prerequisite: Medical Terminology). This 64-hour advanced online course provides the student with the opportunity to learn the proper way to review medical charts and physician documentation to assign appropriate CPT procedural codes. You will benefit from interactive study materials and advanced coding scenarios/exercises. This course is designed as part of a series for students interested in becoming a Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
Cost $190
AAPC Exam Review
(Prerequisite: Medical Terminology, Medical Coding-ICD and Medical Coding-CPT). This 50-hour advanced online course provides the student solid preparation for the National CPC Certification exam administered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (www.aapc.com). Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, ICD-10 Diagnostic Coding, CPT Procedural Coding and HCPCS level II are some of the topics reviewed. You will utilize interactive online tools and information, including mock exam questions to ensure comprehensive preparation for the exam. This is the final course in the online series for students seeking to take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credentialing exam.

- High School or High School equivalent graduate
- Computer Skills (students must be proficient with uploading files online, downloading files to a computer, and able to utilize and E-Book with an access code).

*Medical terminology can be waived if you have taken this course in the past and/or work in a position in health care that requires knowledge of Medical Terminology. A transcript and/ or a letter from your employer stating your job title/description and how long you have been working in the position. You may send transcripts or employer letter to Daveta Strayhorn for review at dstrayhorn@forsythtech.edu.
*These are not self-paced courses. Each week has timed material that will be available and due on a specific due date each week. Students will not have access to prior week’s assignments after due dates have past so students must manage their time accordingly. It is expected that each student completes all work assigned and be proactive in the learning process. This means you must be able/willing to spend 8 or more hours per week per course studying and completing assignments.
